Why was chlorine liberated instead of hydrochloric acid?

I was performing reaction of concentrated nitric acid with table salt. I thought HCl was going to be released, but what I found was, that the gas released smelled like chlorine. The test tube also had become greenish in color indicating chlorine. Why? Did the released HCl got decomposed somehow?
