Catholicism: What if two gay catholics in the church get civil union and still participate in the church?

I would like to say that Catholics should still accept them into the church since they believe we are all sinners, but recently a friend of mine was fired as choir director at a local Catholic church because he's gay. I've lost any respect I had left for the RC.
